How old were you, when you learned to ride a bike?
Since Spring 2016, SBBIKE & COAST/SR2S have been providing support and guidance to P.E. teachers to offer successful 4 sessions (or more) in-school 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade physical education bicycle riding education modules in 10 schools around Santa Barbara County. THANK YOU to the Audacious Foundation for funding the launch of this amazing and life changing program to many kids in our community.
Today, the bike program has been offered to many elementary schools around SB County that are committed to promote bicycling for exercise, health, self confidence, independence, transportation and fun during school hours. Interested in bringing the bike program to your school? Please contact Education Director.
Students learn the importance of properly fitted helmets, how to check their bikes and how to ride safely, which includes starting/stopping, using hand signals, and following the rules of the road.
Testimonial from a 3rd grade teacher at Liberty Elementary School in Santa Maria: "I was hesitant at first....I admit BUT the bike program was amazing! The kids LOVED it! Erandy actually said, "This was the best day of my life!". Lots of sweaty happy kids! A BIG thank you for bringing this to us. Looking forwards to Mondays now :)"
Upper grades learn traffic laws and have their first "driving experience" with a bicycle. They practice how to be visible, predictable and how to ride in traffic. The bike program for 6th graders culminates with a field trip on city streets.
Do you remember the first time you rode a bike? Almost everybody does... Today, many students don't know the joy of bicycling :( but after a program of 4 sessions, all of them will ride with a big smile on their face :)
If you like to work with children and want to help the PE teachers with Bike Education in the schools, please contact the SBBIKE Education Director. Teaching a child to ride a bike is a rewarding experience and as a volunteer, you will love it!
