The
Pro Bike/Pro Walk 98 Conference took place in Santa Barbara
on September 8-11, 1998. There were several bike rides for the
520 conference participants led by members of the Santa Barbara
Bicycle Coalition, the local advocacy group that helped host
the international event. This is one of those rides that anybody
can enjoy. They all start and end at the DoubleTree Pro Bike/Pro
Walk Conference hotel, but you can pick them up anywhere along
the route.

Coast Bike Tour

Highlights
of the Ride

1.
Cabrillo Beachway.
Originally conceived as a bikepath to entice cyclists off the
sidewalks and streets, it has become a popular path for recreational
residents and visitors alike. Designs that will hopefully relieve
congestion are being studied.

2. Undercrossing of Highway 101. This freeway undercrossing
offers bicyclists and pedestrians open views, plantings, minimal
drop, no freeway ramps, and sidewalks raised above the roadway.

3. Downtown Santa Barbara. Years ago, this main street
had on-street parking. In response to competition from malls
outside Downtown, the City removed parking, narrowed the traffic
lanes, installed planters and mid-block signals, widened sidewalks,
and built parking garages on adjacent streets. A commercial renaissance
has resulted.

4. One-way bike streets. Two Downtown streets were changed
from two-way into 15-block-long one-way streets consisting of
one traffic lane and a bike lane on each.

5. De la Vina Street. In spring 1998, this street was
altered from four traffic lanes to three (one is now a center
left-turn lane) plus bike lanes on both sides.

6. Bikepath undercrossings. The flood-control jurisdiction
of creeks allows an ideal means of using existing creek bridges.
The Maria Ygnacio creekside path conveniently passes underneath
Highway 101, the Union Pacific Railroad, and busy Hollister Avenue.
During times of heavy rainfall, gates to the Hollister Road undercrossing
are closed.

7. Atascadero Creek bikepath. Like the Maria Ygnacio path,
the Atascadero Creek bikepath follows a flood-control channel.
Recent restoration of native riparian habitat helps improve the
beauty and encourage native birds and animals along this popular
commuting path between UCSB, Goleta, and Santa Barbara.

8. Connecting neighborhoods. Bridges over small creeks
provide neighborhood access for pedestrians and bicyclists. Two
such bridges are on Arroyo Road and Nueces Drive.

9. Scenic touring. The upscale Hope Ranch residential
area offers splendid recreational rides for residents and visitors.
Note the many equestrian trails and stop at the ocean overlook.

10. Daytime bike lanes. A compromise with residents on
Shoreline Drive resulted in a daytime-only bikelane for commuters
on the residential side of the street, allowing parking at night.
