The
Pro Bike/Pro Walk 98 Conference took place in Santa Barbara
on September 8-11, 1998. There were several bike rides for the
520 conference participants led by members of the Santa Barbara
Bicycle Coalition, the local advocacy group that helped host
the international event. This is one of those rides that anybody
can enjoy. They all start and end at the DoubleTree Pro Bike/Pro
Walk Conference hotel, but you can pick them up anywhere along
the route.

Montecito
Village Bike Ride

The
1925 Casa del Herrera is one of Montecito's historic estates.
It is now managed by a nonprofit organization that conducts tours.

Highlights
of the Ride

1.
Channel Drive.
This road passes by the Santa Barbara Cemetery, known for its
1924 cluster of Mediterranian cloister buildings and ocean-view
plots. A roadway section on the bluffs slipped into the Ocean
a years ago, so the County decided to close it to motorized
traffic, allowing it to become an attractive bike/pedestrian
path.

2. Biltmore Hotel. Built in 1927, this elegant hotel uses
Spanish elements throughout a series of buildings and cottages
over the sprawling, lushly landscaped oceanfront land. It is
one of the highest rated resorts in the country. The sublime
view of the ocean and city from the waterfront prominade is unparalleled.

3. Montecito. Even before the Southern Pacific Railroad
reached Santa Barbara in 1887, wealthy Easterners and Midwesterners
visited the health resorts here. Later, many built large estates
in the hills of Montecito. Today, many estates have been subdivided,
but others are still intact. Movie and TV stars, artists, writers,
and many other famous people currently make their homes here.

4. Casa del Herrera. This historic estate, now open to
the public on a limited basis, has remained in one family since
it was built in 1925. Designed by famous local architect George Washington
Smith, the structure is virtually unaltered, and nearly all
of the original furniture is intact.

5. Montecito Village. There are two shopping areas serving
Montecito, and Montecito Village is the "upper" one.
Shops and restaurants are centered around the intersection of
East Valley Road and San Ysidro Road.

6. Undercrossing of Highway 101 and railroad. This is
the location of an upcoming Caltrans highway project. Sidewalks
and bike lanes will be included, however a proposed bike/ped tunnel under
the railroad has been delayed. Especially hazardous now is the narrow railroad
undercrossing.

7. Andree Clark Bird Refuge. This freshwater lagoon is
a popular bird watching location. Islands provide secure nesting
space free from people and other preditors.
