Service to the larger community is an aspect of the community bike shop model Bici Santa Maria exemplifies.
What's a quick way to halt forward progress if you're using the Good Samaritan shelter in Santa Maria and a bicycle is the only way to get to job interviews? Bicycle theft.
As all DIYers know, every problem has a solution someone or some group can take on. With the support of Bici Centro SM Program Director Ken Dahmen, SM Chamber of Commerce Project Manager Alex Magana and the chamber’s 2018 leadership class stepped up to meet the challenge that had long plagued the shelter. The class of business members chose as its legacy project a bike cage for Good Samaritan. Dahmen showed them the ins and outs of bike cages, the shelter helped out financially, and Wal-Mart donated five bikes, helmets, and locks—available for daily rental. Others can store their bikes, either for the day or overnight. "It's a valuable resource for many people," says Magana.
The cage is just one of many ways Bici SM gives back to the community!
