  • January 22, UCSB advocates meeting, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. Coalition VP Robert Bernstein has reserved a room at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) to organize an effective voice for bicyclists on campus. The relationship of the new group to the Bicycle Coalition will be discussed, along with issues of concern to all campus students, faculty and staff. These issues can range from fixing potholes to the role that bicycling should hold in future campus and community transportation. We need your ideas.   • April 4, Gourmet Century. "The most civilized big bike ride in the country." A six-course, 70-mile feast with bicycling between the courses. Ride starts in Solvang with espresso, homemade granola, croissants, bagels, breads and fruit; it ends with a tri-tip dinner. Phone 688-6385.

  • April 19, Earth Day, sponsored by the Community Environmental Council. Earth Day started in Santa Barbara over 25 years ago as a response to the massive oil spill. It continues as an educational, informative and fun event. The Bicycle Coalition will have a booth, so come by and help or just say hello. De la Guerra Plaza, Santa Barbara.
  • April 26, Cycle for Cats, sponsored by the Animal Shelter Assistance Program. Now in its 3rd year, the “Cat” ride pours every dollar into its wonderful animal shelter program. Two rides, 12 miles and 30 miles, around Goleta, with sag stops, "food galore," raffle prizes and entertainment. Phone 683-3368.

May 1998

  • May 2, Bicycle Ride Against Drinking Drivers, .sponsored by the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office. This free ride includes a T-shirt for all who preregistered. It's a police-led demonstration ride at 9:00 a.m. from Alameda Park in Santa Barbara to Fess Parker's DoubleTree Resort, where there will be entertainment, juice, coffee, bagels, and prizes. Afterwards, the Goleta Valley Cycling Club will lead an optional 20-mile ride for those who wish more. Phone 568-2408.

  • May 9, Tour de Cure, sponsored by the American Diabetes Association. Three rides of 25K, 50K and 100K in length are offered starting at Santa Barbara City College.   • May 16, Bach and Roll Bike Ride, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra. This new ride benefits our local Chamber Orchestra. Three rides out of Santa Barbara include a 10-mile flat coastal ride, a 30-mile ride to Goleta and Hope Ranch, plus a 50-mile one that takes you between Goleta and Summerland.   • May 30, Chris King Trail Daze '98, sponsored by King Cycle Group. This popular event is a day of cleaning and reconstructing the Jesucita Trail. You volunteer your labor for a day and get free food, a commemorative T-shirt, and prizes. Pre- register on forms available at local bike shops or by phoning King Cycle Group at 683-0950.   • July 18, Windmill Century, sponsored by the Tailwinds Bicycle Club. Two rides are offered, a 100-mile century and a 100-kilometer one. Starting location is Los Alamos. Both rides travel over light-traffic roads, passing through rangelands, vineyards, horse farms, eucalyptus forests, and canyons. Real windmills and a finishing tailwind are promised.   • August 12, Coalition Beach Barbecue, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. Bike on down to Santa Barbara's East Beach for a pot-luck barbecue dinner starting at 6:00 p.m. Open to the bicycling public, but you must RSVP Alan Bergquist at 967-0501 and bring a side dish or desert to share. The Bicycle Coalition will provide barbecued meat and drinks to all who have reserved with Alan by August 10th.
  • August 22, Santa Barbara County Triathlon, sponsored by Adventours Outdoor Excursions. Several options are available -- you can swim, bike and run on either a long or short course, or you can team up with others and just bike the 34-kilometer course and let them swim and run. All events are in Santa Barbara and there is a limit of 900 participants. Phone 963-2248 or check the web site www.adventours-inc.com.

  • October 10, Twin Peaks Mountain Bike Ride, sponsored by the Domestic Violence/Child Abuse Prevention Program for the Santa Ynez Valley. Get out your knobbies and take on the challenging 41-mile climb over Figueroa Mountain. Or choose the Twin Peaks Lite ride of 22 miles over rolling hills instead. Continental breakfast, T-shirts, water bottle, three sag stops, and a Kiwanis BBQ lunch afterwards. Teams are encouraged and prizes are given. Phone 686-0295.

  • October 17, People Powered Ride, sponsored by the Goleta Valley Cycling Club. This is the 19th annual ride, with full and metric century rides in the Santa Ynez Valley. Rides begin in the Firestone Meadow near Los Olivos. Great food all along the way and fine support. Join cyclists on this local ride. Phone 962-4307 evenings before 9:00.
  • October 24, Trail Daze, sponsored by King Cycle Group. King Cycle Group in Goleta will again generously sponsor a day of back country trail maintenance. These popular days include free T-shirts, prizes, and food all day. Saturday, October 24, 8:00 AM, Los Prietos Ranger Station, Paradise Road. Work on Camuesa Connector Trail. Sign up at local bike shops or phone King Cycle Group 683-0950 to register. Car pool to the Ranger Station. Show that bikers are responsible trail users who are willing to donate their energy and time to help everybody.
