  • April 22, Earth Day, sponsored by the Community Environmental Council. A day full of fun & environmental appreciation. The Bicycle Coalition will have a booth there, offering encouragement to a sympathetic audience. Volunteer to staff our booth or give bike checkups.   • April 27-29, Southern California Bicycle Expo, sponsored by Heumann Powered Productions. Three days open to the public, this Expo offers Bicycle Advocate's Summit (April 27), freestyle show, indoor dirt test track, bike booths, a 27-mile LA ride, and a kids ride.   • April 28, Gourmet Century, sponsored by King Cycle Group. "The most civilized big bike ride in the country." A six-course, 100-km feast with bicycling in between. Ride starts in Solvang with coffee, juice, Hawaiian bread, coffee cake, yogurt, and fruit; it ends with a grilled Szechuan chicken dinner, served with style.   • May 13, Chris King Trail Daze, sponsored by Chris King Precision Components. This annual event fills up fast. This year, it's part of the IMBA trailbuilding school. Volunteers will make new friends while refurbishing North Tunnel and Matias Potrero trails. Includes breakfast, bag lunch, a BBQ dinner, and famous raffle.   • May 19-27, Bike Week. A week of exciting events, starting off with the Santa Barbara Bike Expo, and highlighting Bike to Work Day and Bike to School Day.   • May 19, Sisquoc Road Race, sponsored by Cyclone Racing Team. A day of road racing around Sisquoc includes the Junior California and Nevada state championships. Volunteers are needed to help. Contact Beth Wallace by email at xyzbethie@aol.com or by phone 735-6673.
  • May 20, Spring Criterium, sponsored by Echelon Santa Barbara. A complementary day to the Sisquoc Road Race, this day includes the criterium part of the Junior California and Nevada state championships. Races at Research Park in Goleta.   • May 20, Tour de Cure, sponsored by the American Diabetes Society. This well-supported ride is a scenic tour through the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley. Out of the Firestone Walker Brewing Company, you can choose a 10-mile family ride (past ostrich, pony and llama farms), a 50-mile mountain bike challenge, or 50-mile and 100-mile road rides.   • July 17, Bike Week 2002 Meeting. With a major sponsor already committed, it's our chance to redefine what we want Bike Week to really be. Come with ideas to the meeting. Santa Barbara City Public Works conference room, 630 Garden Street, 12:00 noon.
  • July 21, Windmill Century, sponsored by the Tailwinds Bicycle Club. Choice of full century or metric century rides out of Los Alamos over lightly-traveled roads. Enjoy cycling past range land, vineyards, horse farms, hills and canyons. Food stops, sag support, and Santa Maria sirloin or chicken barbecue at the end. August 2001

  • August 4-5, Cross Country Mountain Bike Race, sponsored by Stump Grinder Production. Races for numerous groups, plus a kids race, product expo, Santa Maria style barbecue, Firestone Walker beer garden, live music, and a prize raffle.   • August 25, Santa Barbara County Triathlon, sponsored by Adventours. Although they are sold out, you can still watch and cheer others. The Long Course includes a 34-mile bike ride, and the Sprint Triathlon has a 6-mile bike ride. Both start and end at East Beach in Santa Barbara. Look at their web site www.adventours-inc.com for details, then bike on down to watch some really fit competitors.
  • August 26, Open House, sponsored by Valley BMX. The public is invited to try out the Buellton BMX track from 10 AM-3 PM. Riders under 18 must bring a parent or guardian to complete and sign a waiver. They need a full-faced helmet, 3 piece pad set, long pants and long-sleeve shirt. This five-day, 359-mile tour starts in San Francisco, and ends in Santa Barbara or optionally, San Diego. Full support with camping or lodging each night, all meals, hot showers. Pledge required.   • October 13, People Powered Ride, sponsored by Goleta Valley Cycling Club. Your choice of three rides 100, 63, and 30 miles long. The full century challenges you with 6800 feet of climbing! Start is Firestone Vineyard Meadows near Los Olivos. Bagels and coffee at start, fresh fruit & home-baked goods at stops, and barbecue at the end. Space aliens will help shepherd riders this year.   • October 20, MS Bike Tour, sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. There are four rides this year for everybody's abilities: 12, 30, 60, and 100 miles long. Rides start with aerobic warm-ups, continue with themed rest stops, and end with lunch, music, entertainment and massage. Leadbetter Beach, Santa Barbara.   • October 27, Kinetic Sculpture Race. For a fun day, go to Ventura to watch human-powered vehicles ride over sand, water and mud. It's called a race, but the real reward is fun and glory. These races started 31 years ago in Eureka, California, and now there are many around the US. Details available at www.kondorink.com.

  • November 3-4, Buckhorn Trail Epic Ride, sponsored by the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA). The first day features a trailwork session and the second day is highlighted by a big ride. The trail is 34 miles long and has 3,900 feet of climbing. Details at www.imba.com/epics.
  • November 4, Holiday Halves Bicycle Ride, sponsored by Tailwinds Bicycle Club of Santa Maria. Enjoy a 50-mile or 50-km ride out of Orcutt. Sag support, rest stops, and Santa Maria BBQ luncheon along with pedaling through scenic rangeland, vineyards, and canyons.   • November 17, Trail Daze, sponsored by Chris King Precision Components. A day of trail cleaning (and cooperation, fun and food) for hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers. Huge prize raffle after dinner barbecue. This year they're being joined by the Los Padres Trails Day volunteers. Maintenance will be done on Jesuita Trail. Meet at 8:00 AM at Tuckers Grove Area 5.
