  • January 1, Jack Carter Memorial Ride, sponsored by the Goleta Valley Cycling Club. What better way to start out 2002 than a nice climb up to La Cumbre peak?   • January 22, Santa Barbara CarFree meeting. Also known as the "Take a Vacation from Your Car" program. Sponsored by the APCD to promote car-free travel in the South Coast area.   • February 8, Pedaling to the End of the World. This is a presentation by touring cyclist Steven Williams. He has pedaled more than 120,000 miles through 69 countries in the past 25 years. Williams has lectured at National Geographic and the Smithsonian Institution; this is his first time in Santa Barbara. Fleischmann Auditorium in the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History at 7:30 PM. ($6 members, $8 non-members -- tickets at the door).

  • March 12-14, Lake Cachuma Management Planning meeting, sponsored by the US Bureau of Reclamation. There are meetings in three different locations. They seek public input about future recreational activities in the Lake Cachuma area. This is an opportunity to speak out for bike trails into previously closed areas.   • March 18, Wilson Hubbell's Ride Across America Show. Bicycle Coalition Hubbell will show slides of his 50-day bike trip across the Unived States in 2001. This will take place as part of the Santa Barbara County Trails Council's annual meeting.   • March 23, Solvang 2002, sponsored by Planet Ultra. These rides are not for everybody; they're single and double centuries in our beautiful North County. Both rides are out of Solvang. The 193-mile version goes as far north as Morro Bay, while the 105-mile turns around at Guadalupe. Food stops along the way. Information on the Bike Ultra site.
  • March 30-31, Choo Choo Century, sponsored by Goleta Valley Cycling Club. Take the Amtrak train to San Luis Obispo on Saturday, then bike to Santa Barbara on Sunday. Open to club members only. Details from Connie 962-4307; you can also get a register form online.

  • April 7, Bike the Gaviota Coast, sponsored by the Sierra Club. The purpose of this ride is to expose people to the beauty of our endangered south coast. Riders will coordinate carpooling to the top of Refugio Road, then bike down and enjoy a tour and barbecue at the adjacent, new Arroyo Hondo preserve. Meet either at Bagel Cafe (6551 Trigo Road, Isla Vista) at 11:00 AM or at Refugio State Beach at 11:45 AM. If you wish you can alternately bike up and meet the others at the top of Refugio Road about 12:15. Reservations are required, charge for lunch (free for UCSB students).   • April 13, Gourmet Century, sponsored by King Cycle Group. This metric century sets the standard for a day full of outstanding cuisine combined with biking in the Santa Ynez Valley. Start with coffee, juices, fruit, hot oatmeal and homemade bread. Pedal your way through delicious rest stops and end with a sit-down dinner in Solvang. Limited to 350 cyclists.   • April 21, Earth Day, sponsored by the Community Environmental Council. The most pleasant festival in Santa Barbara. We will host a booth there for our 11th year. Volunteer to help staff our booth or just visit (by bike, of course) for a fun and educational time. It runs from 10 AM to 5:30 PM at the County Courthouse Sunken Gardens.   • April 27, Spring Trails Day, sponsored by the California Trails and Greenways Foundation. This year, Munch Canyon and Fir Canyon Trails on Figueroa Mountain will be rehabilitated. Meet at 9:00 AM at the fire station on Figueroa Mountain Road. For details, contact Dave Weaver at 688-7024.
  • April 27, Wildflower Bike Ride at the Sedgwick Reserve, sponsored by UC Natural Reserv System and the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County. A moderate mountain bike ride with an insider's view of the Sedgwick Reserve, located in the mountains north of Los Olivos. Features a 9-mile course, barbeque, prize raffle, T-shirt, kids race, live music and beer garden. Race location is Firestone Vineyard near Los Olivos.   • May 18, Sisquoc Road Race, sponsored by Cyclone Racing Team. A day of road racing around Sisquoc includes the Junior California and Nevada championships.   • May 19, Santa Barbara Smog-free Criterium, sponsored by Echelon Santa Barbara.   • May 19, Tour de Cure, sponsored by the American Diabetes Society. This well-supported ride is your choice of scenic tours starting in Carpinteria.   • May 25, IV Coop Bike party, sponsored by the Isla Vista Food Cooperative. There will be a group bike ride from the Java Station (4447 Hollister Avenue) to Isla Vista at 11:00 AM.   • August 24-25, Santa Barbara Triathlon, sponsored by Adventours. This year, the 21st annual event will expand to have a women's sprint course on Sunday after the traditional Saturday races. The Long Course includes a 34-mile bike ride, and the Sprint Triathlon has a 6-mile bike ride. Both start and end at East Beach in Santa Barbara.   • October 12, Parade of Green Buildings, sponsored by The Sustainability Project. Although you can drive to the 19 buildings and gardens chosen for their low environmental impact, you really should bicycle to them.   • October 12, Bike Tour & Fest, sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Starting from Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara with breakfast, take either the 12, 30, 60 or 100-mile rides.   • October 12, Gaviota OCR Endurance Challenge, sponsored by Underground Events. OCR=Ocean, Canyon, Ridge. This is a triathlon with a twist. Kayak 10 miles in the ocean from Refugio Beach to Arroyo Burro Beach, then run 20 miles to La Cumbre Peak, then mountain bike 30 miles across Camino Cielo Road & then down Refugio Road to the start. No entry, no prizes, no sag support, no food, no water, no web site, and no whining. Barbeque at Refugio afterwards. Phone Paul Shields 685-0344.
