January 2004
- January 4, Winter Cyclocross Series, sponsored by SG Productions. This race is the third of a three-race cyclocross series, now in its second year in Santa Barbara County. This race takes place at Campus Pointe Industrial Park in Goleta, starting at 9:30 AM, depending on class. - January 13, Santa Barbara Car Free meeting. Sponsored by the APCD, the Bicycle Coalition and others to promote car-free travel in the South Coast of our county. - January 16, Safe Routes to School meeting. This meeting will consider Bike to School Day activities and ongoing coordination to make conditions safer for kids to walk and bike to schools in the South Coast of Santa Barbara County. Santa Barbara Public Library, Townley Room, 1:00 PM.
- January 20, Supervisors name The Obern Trail. Recognition will be given by the County Board of Supervisors for all the work by Vie and George Obern to make more and better trails in our County. - January 27, Rincon Creek Road Bridge meeting. Sponsored by Santa Barbara County Public Works. This informational meeting will describe alternatives for the aging bridge that cyclists use. - January 31, The Good Old Days Road Race, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Bicycle Club. This series of races will be held near Los Olivos. The course is a mostly-flat 34 mile loop, but with three short, steep climbs. Over $2500 in awards. Details from Mike Hecker 966-1807 and at www.ridesb.com.

- February 1, Mothballs Criterium, sponsored by Echelon Santa Barbara. This early-February season-opener is a fixture on the Southern California district racing calendar. - March 7, Spring Hazard Sprint Triathlon, sponsored by the UCBS Triathlon Team. This used to be "Splash & Dash," however this year they added an 18-mile cycling ride to make it a true triathlon. Limited to 300 participants. Location is Campus Point at UCSB with the first group starting at 8:00 AM. Bike race is on paths and city streets. - March 9, Santa Barbara County Trails Council Annual Meeting. This annual meeting will have a special speaker, awards and roundup of events during the past year. It's open to the public. This workshop is the first of three that start a year-long process that will determine how to best reduce traffic congestion on streets and highways throughout Santa Barbara's urbanized South Coast. - March 27, Trail Care Series, #2 San Ysidro, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers. The brush above the falls is getting thick on the San Ysidro trail, so please volunteer to help maintain it. Meet at the trailhead at 8:00 AM for a continental breakfast, then carpool to the trail. - April 1, Dedication of Obern Trail. Named in honor of Bicycle Coalition members Vie and George Obern for their work in obtaining approval and funding for this popular South Coast trail. The ceremony will unveil "Obern Trail" signs that are being installed along the Santa Barbara-to-UCSB trail. Ceremony will be at 12:30 at the trailhead along Modoc Road near Hollister Avenue. Please bike there, of course.

- April 12, Comstock Homes and Open Space Hearing, sponsored by the City of Goleta. A draft version of an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) will be the subject of public comment. The EIR will cover a 36-acre subdivision of 78 homes by Comstock Homes, and 239 acres of open space (within the City of Goleta) that includes trails, beach access, parking, and habitat protection. Goleta's EIR is available online at this location. The public hearing will take place at the Goleta Union School District Board Room, 401 North Fairview Avenue, Goleta, at 6:00 PM. - April 17, Family Bicycle Day, sponsored by the Marian Medical Center and Traffic Solutions. This two-hour event is offering low cost bike helmets, advice for safe bicycling, basic bike maintenance, and a practice of basic skills on a course. Prizes and refreshments. - April 18, Santa Barbara Earth Day, sponsored by the Community Environmental Council. The most pleasant festival in Santa Barbara. We will host a booth there for our 13th year. Volunteer to help staff our booth or just visit (by bike, of course) for a fun and educational time. Free bike check-ups. We're raffling off bike shop gift certificates to those who bike to Earth Day. Santa Barbara Car Free will be giving away prizes to people who bike, walk or bus to the festival. - April 21, Safe Routes to School meeting, sponsored by COAST, the Bicycle Coalition, and others. Safe Routes to School partners, parents, volunteers, teachers and administrators will meet for updates, share progress and set goals. Bike to School Day (May 18th) will be discussed. - April 23-25, Firestone Mountain Bike Weekend, sponsored
by RideSB and Stump Grinder Production. This weekend features registration
and course pre-riding on Friday; Rockgardn Chamberlin Ranch Downhill
and Rio Visa Dirt Criterium on Saturday; and State Championship series
Cross Country Race and the free Shimano Youth Series Kids Race on
Sunday. The Bicycle Coalition will have a booth there, soliciting
support for the Santa Ynez River Trail. Among the exciting riding,
there are meals, camping, prize raffle, T-shirt, live music and a
beer garden. Race location is Firestone Vineyard near Los Olivos.

- April 27, Ocean Meadows Homes and Open Space Hearing,
sponsored by Santa Barbara County. A draft version of an Environmental

will cover two subdivisions of 53 homes and condominiums, and open
space (within the unincorporated County) that includes trails, coastal
access parking, and habitat restoration. The County's EIR is available

- May 15, Children's Festival, sponsored by the Family Service Agency. This fun day of activities will take place in Alameda Park in Downtown Santa Barbara, from 10:00-4:00. The Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition will be there to promote safe bicycling to schools.
- May 15, Gibraltar Hill Climb, sponsored by Echelon Santa Barbara. This is the first of the three climbs that Echelon club will hold. Meet at Scofield Park on Las Canoas Road at 8:30 AM, then ride to the start line. From there it is a race of honor as everyone will time themselves. - May 16, Sedgewick Ranch Mountain Bike Ride, sponsored by Goleta Valley Cycling Club. - May 20, Santa Ynez Community Plan Meeting, sponsored by
County Comprehensive Planning. County staff will give their recommendations
derived from earlier workshops on the future of proposed components
of the Community Plan. We hope that it will continue to include bike
trails, especially the Santa Ynez River Trail. The meeting is at 6:30

- May 21, The Triplets of Belleville, sponsored by UCSB Arts & Lectures. This is the first bicycling movie nominated for an Oscar since Breaking Away. It's a French animation film about a woman who trains her grandson for the Tour de France, only to have him kidnapped. 7:30 and 9:30 PM, Campbell Hall, UCSB.
- May 22, Tour de Cure, sponsored by the American Diabetes Society. This well-supported ride is your choice of scenic tours out of Carpinteria, ending with a barbecue. - May 22, Beginner's Bike Ride, sponsored by the Goleta Valley Cycling Club. Nobody will be left behind on this easy loop through UCSB, the Obern Trail, Maria Ignacia Trail, and north Goleta. - June 3, National Mayors' Ride, sponsored by the National Bicycle Greenway. A relay team of cyclists will come to Santa Barbara, receive a proclamation from Councilman Dan Secord, enjoy a ceremony, and then continue north. Teams of cyclists will converge on Chicago in July for a national greenway conference. Details at www.BikeRoute.com/NationalMayorsRide2004.
- June 5-6, Road Race Championships, sponsored by Team Tailwinds. Saturday there's a Masters' championship for Southern California and Nevada, distances 40-77 miles. Sunday, the parallel Elite championship races will be held, 66-110 miles long; they will take place at Vandenberg Air Force Base where security will be strict. Preregistration by June 1 is required. - June 6, National Trails Day, sponsored by Los Padres Forest Association. This is a day of maintenance of the Jesusita Trail, consisting primarily of brushing with some tread work. The main goal is to open up the trail by clearing the brush so trail users can stay on the path. Bring Water, lunch and sunscreen. Meet at Stephens Park at 8:00 AM. BBQ aftwards at 3:00 PM. - June 7, Pot-luck Dinner with John Ciccarelli. This gathering is for Licensed Cycling Instructors and others interested in bicyclist education. Ciccarelli, from Palo Alto, is a transportation expert who is currently consulting for the City of Carpinteria. He will show us his Street Skills Instructor Package presentation, the Bay Area's regional bike-ed calendar, and lots of other photos, movies, and resources. - June 18-20, Bike Trek for Life and Breath, sponsored by the American Lung Association of Santa Barbara County. Ride all three days or just on Saturday, June 19th. - June 21-July 16, Mountain Biking Summer School, sponsored by La Cumbre Junior High School. Open to 7th and 8th graders from anywhere in the County's South Coast, the free morning school will include mountain biking, bike maintenance skills, and trail use ethics. - July 13, Board of Supervisors meeting. This meeting is important because the Supervisors will consider initiation of the Santa Ynez Valley Community Plan. The current draft Plan contains many proposed bike trails and paths, including the Santa Ynez River Trail that we feel is very important for future bicycling in the Valley. The trails may be contested at this meeting and at the August 3rd one as well, so it's important to write or speak out in favor of bike facilities. The county staff's report is online here. Meeting is in the Board of Supervisors Hearing Room, Betteravia Government Center, 511 East Lakeside Boulevard, Santa Maria. Meeting begins at 9:00 AM.

The current draft Plan contains many proposed bike trails and paths, including the Santa Ynez River Trail that we feel is very important for future bicycling in the Valley. The trails may be contested at this meeting, so it's important to write or speak out in favor of bike facilities. The county staff's report is online here. - August 14, Opening of the Shoreline Bikeways, Sponsored by the City of Santa Barbara. This two-hour celebration will feature music by Silver Band, food and drinks to buy from Surfdog, and a 12:30 ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Blum. Bike to the event, check out the new narrowed two-lane Shoreline Drive, bikepath, sidewalk and landscaping. From 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM in Shoreline Park at La Marina Drive, near the top of the hill.
