January 2007

  • January 1, Mountain Bike Ride, sponsored by Chamberlin Ranch. Start the year off with a New Years Day ride at the Chanberlin Ranch near Los Olivos. Both cross-country and downhillers are welcome. The ranch will be open from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Enter off Zaca Station Road, about a mile from the 101/154 junction.
  • January 1, Jack Carter Memorial Ride, sponsored by Goleta Valley Cycling Club. This is the GVCC's annual climb up to La Cumbre peak. Meet at 8:30 AM at Tuckers Grove. Climb up Old San Marcos and Painted Cave; return from Camino Cielo down Gibraltar. Details from Doris Phinney 968-3143.

  • January 17, Santa Barbara Trails Council meeting, sponsored by the SB Trails Council. New proposed and upcoming trails will be discussed, many of which will be suitable for bicycling.   • January 18, Summerland Circulation Workshop, sponsored by Santa Barbara County. This is the second public workshop where Ortega Hill Road and Lillie Avenue circulation for motorists, bicyclists and pedestians will be discussed. Two million dollars are available for improvements, and the public will help decide what their community priorities are. Meeting at 5:30 PM, QAD Building, 2111 Ortega Hill Road, Summerland.   • January 23, Bicycle Coalition Board meeting, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. Our Board members and Advisors will meet to discuss general Coalition issues and direction. Meeting at 7:00 PM at Ralph Fertig's home.
  • January 24, Front Country Trails Task Force Meeting, sponsored by the City and County of Santa Barbara, and the Forest Service. This meeting is mostly administrative, including appointment of chairs, setting meeting times, and adopting a statement of purpose.   • January 26, Santa Barbara Critical Mass Ride, unsponsored. There have been all kinds of Critical Mass bike rides around the world, ranging from fun, law-abiding group rides to lawless in-your-face protests that involve violence and arrests.   • January 26, January 27, Klunkerz, sponsored by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. This full-length film documents the birth of mountain biking. It includes footage of Gary Fisher, Joe Breeze, Tom Ritchey, Charlie Kelly, Mike Sinyard and other MTB pioneers in Marin. Two showings, January 26, 12:30 PM at Victoria Hall Theater, 33 West Victoria Street; and January 27, 10:30 AM at Center Stage Theater, 751 Paseo Nuevo. Both in Santa Barbara.   • January 26, January 30, Ayamye, sponsored by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. This documentary film follows a container of bicycles shipped by Bikes Not Bombs nonprofit to Ghana, Africa. It documents their distribution to Songornya, a salt mining and farming community where bicycle recipients are chronicled a year afterwards to show how their lives have changed. Two showings, January 26, 1:45 PM at Metro 4 Theater, 618 State Street; and January 30, 7:00 PM at Center Stage Theater, 751 Paseo Nuevo. Both in Santa Barbara. Festival details at www.sbiff.org.
  • January 27, Project Rwanda Ride, sponsored by Project Rwanda. Meet mountain bike legend Tom Ritchey (note the film Klunkerz listed above featuring Ritchey) and go on a 9-mile ride from Goleta Beach with him to raise funds for his Project Rwanda. That organization is devoted to using the bicycle as a vehicle for economic growth and regeneration in a post-genocide Rwanda. This ride is being organized by current and past SB Middle School students. You have to register beforehand, check details at this ride site. The ride will organize at Goleta Beach County Park at 9:00 AM.
  • January 27-February 3, Carmichael Training Camp, sponsored by Carmichael Training Systems. Join like-minded cyclists of all abilities as you lay the foundation for your cycling goals in 2007. CTS Founder Chris Carmichael returns to the Santa Ynez Valley each year because the roads are the perfect training ground for cyclists of all levels. A single package includes meals, hotel, bike fit, and rides with Discovery Team members. Details are here.
  • January 28, We Just Work Here, Trials Love Course 99, and Mountain Unicycle Weekend, sponsored by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The main film is We Just Work Here about artisans, framebuilders and racers of Santa Cruz Bicycles. The two unicycling films will follow.   • February 3, Front Country Trails Task Force Meeting, sponsored by the City and County of Santa Barbara, and the US Forest Service. At this meeting, staff from the three agencies will provide background information on jurisdictional boundaries, policies, practices, issues, and work previously conducted by the Front Country Trails Working Group (FCTWG) and the Los Padres Forest Association (LPFA).   • February 3, Obern Trail Cleaning, sponsored by Goleta Valley Cycling Club. We provide the brooms, shovels, gloves and bags. We'll clean up the Bike Path for the first time in 2007.   • February 4, Mothballs Criterium, sponsored by Echelon Cycling. There will be prizes given away at this Goleta series of races. Races are held along a 0.6-mile loop course. Details to follow, or contact Mark Musicant 966-4554 or markmusicant@cox.net.
  • February 4, Marla Streb Clinic, sponsored by Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Volunteers. This is a unique opportunity to learn cross-country skills from a professional biker. There are two two-hour clinics, each limited to 15 participants. The morning one is limited to females; the afternoon one is open to everybody. Bring your own bike, helmet and gloves.   • February 5, Girls & Women in Sports Luncheon, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table. Biker Marla Streb is in town and the Round Table will be honoring her. The luncheon takes place at Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara, starting at 11:30 AM. Tickets and information at sbroundtable.org.
  • February 5, UCSB Distinguished Woman in Sports Lecture, sponsored by the UCSB's Woman's Center. Come to a free presentation by Marla Streb, world famous mountain biker. Currently aged 41, Streb’s fearless nature has resulted in five broken collarbones, six concussions, two blown ligaments, 200 stitches, and broken ankles, fingers and thumbs. She has just returned from Costa Rica where she developed a mountain bike park and worked on rainforest preservation. Lecture at 7:00 PM, Corwin Pavilion at UC Santa Barbara. Further details here.

  • February 9, An Inconveneint Path, sponsored by Santa Barbara Safe Streets. This forum will deal with community growth and planning for transportation changes.   • February 13, Santa Barbara Car Free meeting, sponsored by the APCD, the Bicycle Coalition and others to promote car-free travel in the South Coast of our county.   • February 18-25, Amgen Tour of California, sponsored by Amgen. This professional bicycle stage race will attract 18 professional cycling teams from around the world to compete across 650 miles of California roadway from San Francisco to Long Beach. Santa Barbara County is the only California county chosen to host two stages. On February 23, there will be a time trial in Solvang. And on the 24th, Stage 6 will start in the City of Santa Barbara and finish in Santa Clarita. We will have booths in both Solvang and Santa Barbara, plus bike races and a bike SafetyVille for children starting at 8:00 AM before the Santa Barbara stage start. It's estimated that millions will watch the Tour in person. Santa Barbara county event details are here.
  • February 20, Asiemut, Roam, and other films, sponsored by UCSB. Asiemut documents a couple’s ambitious six month, 8,000-kilometer cycling expedition across Asia. They biked from Mongolia through China, Tibet, Nepal and into India. Roam is a mountain-bike film that follows the travels of the world’s top riders as they explore new places to ride, and visit some of the notorious meccas of mountain biking. Four other short films selected from the Banff Mountain Film Festival will be screened. Show at 7:30 PM, Campbell Hall, UCSB. Film details are here.
  • February 21, Ortega Hill Ribbon Cutting, sponsored by Caltrans. This is a celebration for the completion of Ortega Hill bikepath and adjacent Highway 101 auxillary lane. The media and elected officials will be there, so come by to show how much we appreciate our newest bikepath. Time is 10:30 AM.
  • February 21-25, "Follow the Tour" Cycling Vacation, sponsored by Santa Barbara Wine Country Cycling Tours. This guided tour will include riding several stages of the Amgen Tour of California¸ including the pivotal Solvang Time Trial, and seeing some of the top professional cyclists in the world. Deluxe accommodations, gourmet dining, and a wine tasting dinner. Details and registration here.
  • February 21-26, Tour of California—South, sponsored by Trek Tours. This 5-day cycling excursion follows the southern half of the Amgen Tour of California. Three nights in Los Olivos, two nights in Newport Beach, with 15-50 miles of daily cycling on many roads followed by the Tour racers. Tour details at www.trektours.com.
  • February 22, Traveling with Lance, sponsored by Shoerue Productions. This is a free showing of the film Traveling with Lance through France, about Lance Armstrong's final 2005 Tour de France. In French with English subtitles. The film is by 58-year old traveler Steve Manis, who allows Lance's final Tour to draw him back to the road and rediscover France.   • February 22-28, Vision Quest Training Camp, sponsored by Vision Quest Coaching. Organized by professional cyclist Robbie Ventura, a former US Postal Cycling Team member, this week-long camp if for everybody. It runs out of Solvang and is scheduled to coincide with the Amgen Tour of California. This camp is sold out, but you can check details about their training programs on their website www.visionquestcoaching.com.

  • March 1 and March 3, Bicycling Skills for Women, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. We’re offering a two-day course designed for women, taught by women, although anybody can attend. If you want to learn the basics of riding your bicycle confidently in a supportive and fun environment, then this is the class for you! The first part is biking instruction inside, the second part is basic repairs and on-road experience. Instruction will be held at the SBCAG Building, 260 North San Antonio Road, Santa Barbara. This five-day tour starts in Buellton, ends in Santa Ynez, and consists of 250 miles of supported cycling in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.   • March 13, Santa Barbara New Trails Committee, sponsored by New Trails Santa Barbara.   • March 31, Solvang Double Century, sponsored by Planet Ultra. A whole 193 miles from Solvang to Morro Bay and back. Riders must be pre-registered; starting between 4:30 and 7:30 AM, depending on your estimated total time. Rest stops along the way, sag support. Limited to 550 riders. Elevation gain is 7500 feet.   • April 1-6, Santa Barbara Training Camp with Kevin Livingston, sponsored by Trek Travel. This is a week of training with former USPS pro cyclist Kevin Livingston includes individual training sessions, fitness assessment, setting performance goals, group rides and climbing/descending days.   • April 13, A Time to Heal, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Don Riders.   • April 15, Kendra Chiota Payne Memorial Triathlon, sponsored by the UCSB Triathlon Team. This new early season sprint race consists of a 1/2-mile ocean swim, 16-mile bike, and a 3-mile run.   • April 15 , Bicycle Repair Workshop, sponsored by Santa Barbara Bici Centro.   • April 23, Safe Routes to School Task Force meeting, sponsored by concerned individuals. Child safety for walking and biking near South Coast schools will be discussed. This weekend features registration and course pre-riding on Friday; Chamberlin Ranch Downhill on Saturday; and Endurance 75-mile Cross Country Race and the free Kids Race on Sunday. Among the exciting riding, there are meals, camping, prize raffle, T-shirt, live music and a beer garden. Race location is Firestone Vineyard near Los Olivos.   • May 16, Ride of Silence, unsponsored. This ride will commemorate those lost or injured in bicycling crashes in our area. The ride was started in Texas in 2003, and has since grown to over 250 locations worldwide. It's a slow, 12 MPH silent ride of about 10 miles. To learn more about the movement, look at www.rideofsilence.org. The ride will begin at 6:00 PM at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, 2559 Puesta del Sol, Santa Barbara. If you drive there, please park in the rear of the Museum lot. The ride will end just before Willie Weir's talk (see next listing) that will begin with a moment of silence for those bicyclists whom we have lost.
