  • January 1, Jack Carter Memorial Ride, sponsored by Goleta Valley Cycling Club. This is the GVCC's annual climb up to La Cumbre peak. Meet at 8:30 AM at Tuckers Grove. Climb up Old San Marcos and Painted Cave; return from Camino Cielo down Gibraltar. Details from Doris Phinney 968-3143.

  • January 9, Gibraltar Road Hill Climb Time Trial, sponsored by 3lete.com. This is the first of three competitive rides; its's 8 miles long with 3000 feet of climbing. There are several classifications of competition. You can ride any individual one, or all of them. Race details here.
  • January 14, Bike Map Update Open House, sponsored by Traffic Solutions. The Santa Barbara County Bike Map is being updated. If you have corrections or additions to the bike routes, or to other material on the map, stop by any time between 5:30-7:00 PM and tell them what you think. Or just come by to see what's happening.   • January 17-20, Women’s Winter Bicycle & Spa Tour Package, sponsored by Santa Barbara Wine Country Cycling Tours. Includes Santa Ynez hotel, bike & helmet, rides each day, sag support, spa treatment, most meals, pick up from Santa Barbara airport. Details here.
  • January 19, Highway 246 Open House, sponsored by the city of Solvang. This workshop will consider alternatives for Highway 246 intersection at Alamo Pintado Road. Options are standard signals or one or maybe two roundabouts. Drawings and transportation consultants will be available starting at 3:00 PM, with a presentation at 6:00 followed by questions and comments, ending at 7:00 PM.   • January 20, Annual Membership Meeting, sponsored by the Montecito Trails Foundation. Meet new board members, new agency staff. Hear trail status reports that include completed work, conditions, and upcoming trail work on on McMennemy trail and elsewhere. At 5:30PM, QAD, 2111 Ortega Hill Road, Summerland.
  • January 21 and 23, Street Skills for Cyclists Class, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. Learn how to cope better with traffic in an urban setting. The class will help you foresee and avoid accidents, be visible day and night, position yourself in traffic, cross freeway bridges, equip your bike, and lots more including on-road bicycling on Saturday.   • January 25-March 15, Learn Your Bike Adult Class, sponsored by Bici Centro. This is an eight-week class which focuses on in-depth troubleshooting and diagnosis of bicycle repairs. Monday evenings 7:00-9:00 PM. 601 E. Montecito Street, Santa Barbara. Program registration and details here.

  • January 26, Bicycle Coalition Board Meeting, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. This meeting for our Board members and Advisors will take place at Dave Bourgeois' home, 7:00 PM.
  • January 30, Jesustia Trail Work Day, sponsored by the Los Padres Forest Service and others. Volunteers will repair and improve water control structures on the trail. Meet at 9:00 AM at the Santa Barbara Mission Parking Lot for sign-in. Bring snacks, water, work shoes, long pants, gloves, and a helmet. Details from Chris Orr at chris.orr@sbmtv.org.
  • January 30, Family Bike Trip: Butterfly Preserve, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. Depending on your starting location, this is a 4 or 8 mile trip to the Ellwood monarch butterfly area. The ride starts from Goleta Beach or Isla Vista School. For those 8 years and older.   • January 30, The Poor College Kids Road Race, sponsored by UCSB Cycling. This race starts on Zaca Station Road north of Buellton. It's a 17-mile out and back race on quiet country roads with rolling hills. Details here.
  • January 31, Mothballs Criterium, sponsored by Echelon Santa Barbarta. There will be cash and merchandise prizes given away at this Goleta series of races that run all day 7:00 AM-5:00 PM. Races are held along a 0.65-mile loop course. Information at www.echelonsantabarbara.org.

  • February 5 & 8, Don Riders for Life, sponsored by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. This short film by Dorothy Littlejohn is about the Santa Barbara High School low-rider custom bike club. It's one of three films packaged in the "SB All About School" show. On February 5th, it's at 6:30 PM at Victoria Street Theater. On February 8th, it's at 10:45 AM at Fiesta Four Theater. Ticket info here.
  • February 6, Jesusita Trail Restoration, sponsored by the Santa Barbara County Trails Council and others. CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN. Successful work on the lower Jesusita Trail on January 26 will be continued on higher trail sections. Rain will cancel. Meet at 9:00 AM in the Mission parking lot.   • February 7 & 14, Freedom Riders, sponsored by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Freedom Riders is a story of the progression of trail building for mountain biking in the USA over the last 10 years. Santa Barbara Museum of Art, February 7 at 10:00 AM. February 14 at 1:00 PM.   • February 9-10, UCSB Bike Gripe, sponsored by AS BIKES committee. If you're at the University, stop by either day to let the BIKES people know what your bicycling priorities are. Both days 11:30-1:30. Tuesday in front of the Arbor, Wednesday in front of the UCen. Free pizza for participants.
  • February 10, Highway 101 Overcrossing Project, sponsored by the city of Goleta. This open house will allow people to view and comment on three alternative plans for a bicyclist/pedestrian overcrossing of Highway 101 west of Storke Road.   • February 15-20, Buellton Spring Training Camp, sponsored by Carmichael Training Systems. Join cyclists of all abilities as you lay the foundation for your cycling goals in 2008. CTS Founder Chris Carmichael returns to the Santa Ynez Valley each year because the roads are the perfect training ground for cyclists of all levels. The package includes, meals, hotel, nutritional analysis and daily rides. Camp details here.
  • February 17, Cycle Tracks Webinar, sponsored by the APBP and Santa Barbara city. This free 90-minute web seminar is produced by the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals. Cycle tracks are one or two-way bicycle ways of travel in urban areas separate from cars and pedestrians. Experts will discuss designs and intersection treatments. 630 Garden Street, 1st floor "fishbowl" meeting room, Santa Barbara, 12:00 noon.
  • February 19, UCSB Bike Shop Grand Opening, sponsored by AS Bike Shop. This celebration of the new BIke Shop (same location as the old one) includes free giveaways, free food, and an auction of 20 ready-to-ride bikes. All proceeds will go back to help support UCSB's bicycle system. From 12:00 noon to 3:00 PM.
  • February 20, Ride4Rwanda, sponsored by Tom Ritchey. Rain or shine, this family ride will raise money to buy cargo bicycles to Rwandan coffee farmers. Registration starts at 9:00 AM, ride at 10:00 from Goleta Beach to More Mesa and back. Coffee and snacks, plus T-shirts for first 150 registered riders. Details here.

This 11-minute mountain bike film blasts down everything from the French Alps to British Columbia, incorporating dirt, trail, freeride, slopestyle and downhill mountain biking. Details here.
  • February 23, Bicycle Coalition Board Meeting, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. This meeting for our Board members and Advisors will take place at Matt Dobberteen's home, 7:00 PM.
  • February 24, Take a Seat, sponsored by UCSB Arts & Lectures. This is part of the Banff Mountain Film Festival. This 46-minute mountain bike film describes Dominic Gill's ride from Alaska to Argentina on a tandem bike, offering others a ride. He came through Santa Barbara in October 2007, hosted by Ralph Fertig for a night. Details here.
  • February 27, Mountain Bike Camp, sponsored by the SoCal High School Cycling League. The Stumpgrinder Dirt Club in Los Olivos hosts the Mountain Bike Camp for students from all over Southern California. This is one of three Southern California camps where participants will improve mountain biking skills, have fun, and learn good trail etiquette. More info from Matt Gunnell or from www.socaldirt.org.
  • February 27, Dunn Kids Triathlon, sponsored by Dunn School. Open to kids aged 3-14, this swim, bike and run competition will result in T-shirts and medals all around.   • March 21, Kendra Chiota Payne Memorial Triathlon, sponsored by the UCSB Triathlon Team. This early season sprint distance race is ideal for beginners and veterans alike.   • April 10, State Trails Day, sponsored by Los Padres National Forest and others. This year, work is being done on West Fork Cold Springs and Tunnel Trails.   • April 10-11, Santa Ynez Kenda Cup Mountain Bike Races, sponsored by Stump Grinder Productions. This is one of 13 US Cup races. Cross-country, Super D, Down Hill, and Slalom races near Los Olivos. Event details here.
  • April 11, First Annual BBQ, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Trails Council. This is the first annual event featuring a day 12:00 noon-6:00 PM at El Capitan Canyon Ranch. It features a guided 12-mile mountain bike ride, trail hikes and a trail run. For $35 you get tours plus a mid-afternoon meal followed by live music. Details at www.sbtrails.org.

  • April 15, Cycling Round Table, sponsord by SB Chicken Ranch, Telegraph Brewing Company, and CycleMAYnia. This free event is open to bike clubs, shops, businesses, and organizations in Santa Barbara county. The idea is to share ideas and build community. At Casa La Palmas, 323 East Cabrillo Boulevard, Santa Barbara, 7:00 PM.
  • April 16, Green Shorts Awards Ceremony, sponsored by the Community Environmental Council and others. This will be the primier showing of winning Green Shorts videos. Entry charge of $7. It's at 7:30 PM at the Lobero Theatre, 33 East Canon Perdido Street, Santa Barbara.
  • April 17-18, Santa Barbara Earth Day, sponsored by the Community Environmental Council. The most pleasant festival in Santa Barbara.
