January 2011

  • January 1, Jack Carter Memorial Bike Ride, sponsored by the Goleta Valley Cycling Club. This annual ride will start your year right. It climbs up Old San Marcos Road, Painted Cave, east on Camino Cielo, down Gibraltar, then back via Foothill. Starts at 8:30 AM, Tuckers Grove County Park, Foothill Road at Turnpike.
  • January 6, Bike Moves, unsponsored ride. Join Santa Barbara's First Thursday event with an easygoing ride that obeys traffic laws. Meet at the WheelHouse at 7:30 PM, 528 Anacapa Street, Santa Barbara. Read about it here.
  • January 8, Gibraltar Hill Time Trial, sponsored by 3Lete. This race climbs from Sheffield Reservoir to La Cumbre Peak at the top of the Santa Ynez Mountains over Santa Barbara. Begins at 8:00 AM. Cash prizes in different categories. Details at www.3lete.com.
  • January 11, Santa Barbara Car Free Meeting, sponsored by the APCD, the Bicycle Coalition and others to promote car-free travel in our county. The project has a website www.santabarbaracarfree.org, hosts programs and has developed a free map. Meeting at 11:00 AM, the Santa Barbara Inn 901 East Cabrillo Boulevard, Santa Barbara.   • january 13, Get Your Bike Ready To Ride, sponsored by Bici Centro. In this clinic, you will learn all the important aspects of basic and responsible bike maintenance: fixing flats, locking up, basic adjustment and keeping your bike clean. Cost is $20, from 7:30-9:00 PM, Bici Centro, 601 East Montecito Street, Santa Barbara. Register online here.
  • January 18-March 8, Learn Your Bike, sponsored by Bici Centro. This is an eight-week class which focuses on in-depth troubleshooting and diagnosis of bicycle repairs. Tuesday evenings 7:00-9:00 PM, 601 East Montecito Street, Santa Barbara. Entire series for $95, or individual classes if room is available for $20. Details and registration here.
  • January 20, Cycling Rights and Responsibilities Clinic, sponsored by Bici Centro. Build the confidence to ride anywhere you want. Learn your legal rights and responsibilities on the road. No bicycle needed for this clinic. It costs $20 and takes place 7:30-9:00 PM at Bici Centro, 601 East Montecito Street, Santa Barbara. Register online here.
  • January 20, Buellton Planning Commission Meeting, sponsored by the City of Buellton. On the agenda will be consideration of a multipurpose trail along the Santa Ynez River. City Council Chambers, 140 West Highway 246, Buellton, 6:00 PM.
  • January 22, Bike Handling Skills Clinic, sponsored by Bici Centro. Learn good bike handling skills to becoming a safer, more confident cyclist. On a parking lot, you will learn a number of skills to have a better control of your bike. Cost is $20. From 10:00 AM-12:00 noon, Bici Centro, 601 East Montecito Street, Santa Barbara.   • January 22, Cycling Group Ride around Santa Barbara, sponsored by Bici Centro. You will practice your knowledge and show a full understanding of vehicular cycling during a managed group ride. It costs $20, runs 10:00 AM-12:00 noon, and starts from Bici Centro, 601 East Montecito Street, Santa Barbara. Details and online registration here.
  • January 25, COAST General Meeting, sponsored by COAST. The Coalition for Sustainable Transportation will hold a meeting to discuss various transportation issues. Meet at 12:00 noon, Santa Barbara Public Library, West Gallery, 30 East Anapamu Street.
  • January 25, City Council Meeting, sponsored by the city of Santa Barbara. Some city council members are seeking the removal of pedestrian and bicyclist safety and aesthetic design guidelines for Chapala Street. Meeting at 2:00 PM, Council chambers, 735 Anacapa Street, Santa Barbara.
  • January 29, Poor College Kids Road Race, sponsored by UCSB Cycling. This race starts on Zaca Station Road north of Buellton. It's a 17-mile out and back race on quiet country roads with rolling hills. Details forthcoming.
  • January 30, Bicycle Coalition Board Retreat, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. This meeting for our Board members and Advisors will take place at a time and location to be determined.
  • January 30, Mothballs Criterium, sponsored by Echelon Santa Barbara. There will be over $2800 in prizes given away at this Goleta series of races that run all day 7:00 AM-5:00 PM. Races are held along a 0.65-mile loop course. Information here.

February 2011

  • February 3, Bike Moves, unsponsored ride. Join Santa Barbara's First Thursday event with an easygoing ride that obeys traffic laws. Meet at the WheelHouse at 7:30 PM, 528 Anacapa Street, Santa Barbara. Read about it here.
  • February 5-6, Pure Speed Time Trial Clinic, sponsored by Revolution Coaching. This is a two-day clinic to improve time trial techniques. Day one in Santa Barbara working on positioning, technique, pre-race workout. Day two is at a Piru time trial. Details at http://revolutioncoaching.com/.
  • February 6-11, Solvang Winter Break, sponsored by Bicycle Adventure Club. Route sheets are provided for 20-to-30 mile rides from Solvang's Wine Valley Inn. Fee includes room, some meals, afternoon social hour; no van support. Membership in BAC is required. Details here.

  • February 23-27, Base Cycling Camp, sponsored by Chez Schnitz. This five-day cycling camp includes 210 miles of riding in hills and mountains in north Santa Barbara county, out of Los Alamos. Details at http://chezschnitz.com.

March 2011

  • March 1, Chris Quint program, sponsored by our Bicycle Coalition. This evening gathering will feature bicyclist CHris Quint describing good and not so good bike facilities in Europe and South America. At 6:00 PM, location forthcoming.
  • March 3-9, Endure It Solvang Camp, sponsored by Solvang Triathlon Camps. This multi-sport camp is for cyclists and triathletes. There are coached swim, bike and run sessions. Includes lunches, evening meals, but not accommodations. Bike rides 30-80 miles each day. Details at http://solvangtriathloncamps.com.

  • March 12, Solvang Century, sponsored by SCOR. The West's big seasonal kickoff ride. Choose 100 or 50-mile rides starting from Solvang. Raffle, Cycling Expo barbecue, and thousands of cyclists. Info and online registration www.bikescor.com or phone SCOR 562-690-9693.
  • March 13-18, Central Coast Bike Tour, sponsored by Undiscovered Country Tours. This tour includes San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara county back roads, with undiscovered inns and restaurants. Up to 250 miles over six days. Details here.
  • March 14-19, Solvang Spring Tour, sponsored by Planet Ultra. Seven days of rides out of Buellton, each ride 30-110 miles long, returning to Buellton each night. Chose each day from a shorter or longer ride. Unique back roads that other organized tours miss. Unsupported, but suggested rest and meal stops are offered along the way. Elevation gains vary from 1500-5000 feet. Details at www.planetultra.com.
  • March 20-25, Vines to Coast Cycling Package, sponsored by Santa Barbara Wine Country Cycling Tours. Spend 3 nights in Solvang, then 2 nights in Santa Barbara with cycling every day 20-35 miles, or more if you wish. Gourmet lunches, fine dining, deluxe accommodations, vehicle support, and local wines. Details here.
  • March 20-25, Solvang Wine Country Tour, sponsored by Cycling Escapes. This 6-day tour includes 409 miles of challenging rides out of Solvang, encompassing 26,000 feet of climbing. Includes watching the Tour of California. Includes 7 nights lodging, all meals, sag support, full lunch stops, airport shuttle from Santa Barbara. Registration and details here.
