Two Major Cycling Victories in SYV

SYV_updates_2.png

Our local bicycling community at large should be very proud that we won two major victories this past week.

Last night, The Sunny Fields Spur Presentation and Public Workshop, hosted by Alta Planning and the City of Solvang was very informative and productive. There were very passionate community members on both sides of a very complex but necessary issue. Although contentious at times, everyone in attendance agreed that a bicycle path was necessary. Alta Planning presented 6 potential routes for the Sunny Fields Spur Bike Path; 2 of which overwhelmingly were voted for. This is not the final step. These two options will be presented to the Solvang City Council on July 23rd. The Council will vote on which option they believe best meets the goals of a bike path to Sunny Fields.

On July 23rd, Alta Planning and Solvang Public Works will recommend Alignment 3 and Alignment 5 to the Solvang City Council as the final 2 options. SYV Spoke supports both of these alignments as preferred routes for the Sunny Fields Spur, with the 3rd Alignment as our first choice. The council will deliberate and vote on the alignment option they believe best meets the goals of the project and suits the needs of the community.

Santa Ynez Valley Spoke asks you to please SAVE THE DATE and attend this important Solvang City Council meeting on Monday, July 23rd. More details to follow.

On Tuesday evening, the Solvang City Council voted unanimously to pursue the Solvang Time Trial for the 2019 Amgen Tour of California. Again, this is not a final decision. However, it is a very big step forward. Kirk Nordgren and I will set another exploratory meeting date in mid to late June to begin identifying leadership for a Local Organizing Committee. This L.O.C. will plan the logistics of the event and work closely with the City of Solvang and AEG, the governing body of the ATOC. If you are interested in attending this meeting, please email Kirk (knordgren@trainright.com) or Corey (corey@drjsbikeshop.com).

Both the Santa Ynez Valley Spoke and the Santa Ynez Valley Cycling Club would like to thank everyone who made time to attend these two meetings. Your presence and comments made a tremendous difference. This is just the beginning. With each of your help, we can build a bicycle network in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley for our families, recreational and visiting cyclists to enjoy.
