  • Central Coast Cycling. Rick Sweet has put online a number of rides that you can take in the northern part of Santa Barbara County. They are grouped as road rides, pleasure rides and mountain bike rides.

  • Elings Park BMX Raceway. This is an American Bicycle Association sanctioned track, located in Elings Park, Santa Barbara.

  • Goleta Valley Cycling Club. Local bicycling club has friendly people, nice rides from beginner to advanced, mostly road rides. Based in the Santa Barbara area, but offers rides all over the County. Bicycling links on this site.
  • Hazard's Cyclesport. Oldest bike shop in Santa Barbara (established 1914). Carry bikes by: Specialized, Cannondale, Softride, Electra, Griffen, Calfee. Complete line of accessories and expert repairs.
  • Isla Vista Bicycles. Bike shop in Isla Vista rents bikes, sells new and used mountain bikes, hybrids, beach cruisers, and recumbents.
  • Lompoc Valley Bicycle Club. A civic-minded, family-oriented club of casual on-road and off-road riders in the Lompoc Valley.
  • Mainstreet Cycles. Mainstreet Cycles in Santa Maria is a pro level shop without the attitude, they have all the essentials for your cycling needs.
  • Multi-Use Trails Coalition. This group is countering efforts to exclude or limit mountain bikers and unicyclists from South Coast trails.
  • Open Air Bicycles. Santa Barbara shop sells Trek and Schwinn bicycles, America's top selling brands. A complete line of all major accessories, and bike service.
  • Play It Again Sports. Good selection of used bicycles and other sports equipment. In Goleta and Santa Maria.
  • Pedal & Paddle of Santa Barbara. Bike and kayak excursions are offered on an individual basis to individuals or groups in and around Santa Barbara County.
  • Santa Barbara Adventure Company. They arrange bike trips that get you close to nature and away from crowds. Guided biking, kayaking, hiking trips, plus excursions to the Channel Islands or wineries, for one or several days are possible.
  • Santa Barbara Bike Repair. This mobile repair service will come to your home or place of work.

  • Santa Barbara BMX. Local BMX action on its own track in Santa Barbara. Weekly practice action and races.
  • Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Trail Volunteers. This is a group of trail advocates who are dedicated to maintaining trails for everyone's enjoyment. Many also enjoy riding mountain bikes. They encourage respect for all trail users and perform hundreds of hours of free maintenance each year.
  • Santa Barbara Triathlon Club. The Club is for multisport athletes of all abilities. Whether the goal is a first sprint triathlon or the Hawaii Ironman, they train, race, offer encouragement, and have fun.
  • Santa Barbara Wine Country Cycling Tours. Choose tours from half day to a full week of cycling with support vehicle, Specialized road bikes, wine tasting, gourmet dining and first-class accommodations. Bicycle rental.
  • Santa Maria BMX. A National Bicycle League track located at 4040 Highway 101 south of Santa Maria in the Elks Park.
  • Stump Grinder Dirt Club. Members of this off-road group enjoy miles of access to ranchland near Los Olivos.
  • Tailwinds Bicycle Club. Racing and riding club around Santa Maria.
  • Team Fastrack/BDC. Team Fastrack/BDC is a group of 35 cyclists from the Santa Barbara area who compete in local and regional races.
  • Team Tailwinds. This is the site for the road racing Team Tailwinds of Santa Maria and surounding central coast area.
  • True Flight Cycle Works. This Santa Barbara shop specializes in fixed-gear bikes, but also has BMX, touring and trekking bikes.
  • UCSB campus commuting. Web site has information for the University of California Santa Barbara, bike commuting employees, including information on incentives.
  • UCSB Cycling. The University's bike racing team. Schedule for collegiate cycling. Bike part classified ads.
  • UCSB Triathlon Team. Open to UCSB and Santa Barbara City College students. A competitive sport and social team.
  • VeloPro Cyclery. Mountain, road, city, and BMX bikes plus trikes, accessories, and repairs. Bikes by Kona, GT, Raleigh, Gary Fisher, Santa Cruz, Dyno, Redline, Free Agent, and Powerlite. Locations is Santa Barbara and Goleta.
  • Village Dirtbags. This off-road bike group seeks exercise, competition and friendship while preserving the environment.
  • Wheel Fun Rentals. Rent a mountain bicycle, beach cruiser, tandem, or surrey in Santa Barbara or Solvang. Three locations in Santa Barbara, on Cabrillo Boulevard, on State Street, and at the DoubleTree Resort. One location in Solvang.
  • WheelHouse. A lifestyle bike shop in Santa Barbara has hybrids, utility, transport and city bikes.

California bicycling advocacy organizations

US bicycling advocacy organizations

  • Adventure Cycling Association. Adventure Cycling continues to promote bicycle touring and continuous routes throughout the US. Excellent maps are available for purchase and rides are offered.
  • Alliance for Biking and Walking. Formerly the "Thunderhead Alliance," this is a coalition of bicycling advocacy groups within North America. We are one of the founding members.
  • America Bikes. This organization worked to obtain a two favorable reauthorizations of the 1991 federal TEA-21 transportation act. They strengthened Enhancements, CMAQ, and other bicycle-related programs, and achieved a national Safe Routes to School program in the SAFETEA-LU act that will expire in 2009.
  • Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute. Extensive source of information on bicycle helmets.
  • Bikes Belong Coalition. An organization of bicycle manufacturers who are lobbying for a bicycle friendly policy in the federal government. Their mission is to put more people on bikes more often.
  • League of American Bicyclists. Century-old national organization protects the rights and promotes the interests of bicyclists; provides information about bicycling to its members and others. Site includes information about League events and affiliated clubs.
  • National Center for Bicycling and Walking. A national advocacy group headquartered in Washington DC, they work closely with Congress and the US Department of Transportation. Producers of Pro Walk/Pro Bike conferences. Their web site has an excellent list of other resources.
  • National Center for Safe Routes to School. This is a US Department of Transportation clearinghouse for information about the federal Safe Routes to School program.
  • Pro-Bicycle. Advocacy for cycling issues, including many links to other bicycling advocacy sites worldwide.
  • Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Group has managed to convert over 10,000 miles of abandoned railways into public trails. Their interests are expanding to include all trails (whether from railroads or not) and urban greenways.
  • Transportation for America. This new organization is concentrating on charting a new direction for our nation's transportation system. They are urging the President and Congress to create the world-leading, sustainable transportation system we need.

International bicycling advocacy organizations

  • Australian Bicycle Council. This is the organization responsible for implementing a national bicycling strategy that has six objectives covering improvements to cycling in the areas of coordination, integration, facilities, safety, information and education.
  • Cycling Advocates Network. The voice of cyclists in New Zealand.
  • European Cyclists' Federation. This is the world's largest bicycle advocacy group, representing some 47 organizations in 29 countries, totaling nearly 400,000 cyclists.
  • Institute for Transportation & Development Policy. They promote environmentally sustainable and equitable transportation worldwide.
  • International Mountain Bicycling Association. IMBA is a non-profit, public-supported organization. The mission of IMBA is to promote mountain bicycling opportunities that are environmentally and socially responsible.
  • Sustrans. The UK's sustainable transport site. They promote projects that encourage people to walk, cycle, and use public transport in order to reduce motor traffic.

Bicycling standards & planning

  • BikePlan Source. Information about improving bicycling in your community. Reference library, planning guide.
  • Caltrans Site. Here is the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) site that contains mostly roadway information.
  • California Vehicle Code. California Vehicle Code sections 21200-21212, pertaining to bicycling. Find out just what's legal and what's not in our state.
  • California Highway Design Manual. Chapter 1000 from the Design Manual has information of designing bicycle facilities. Last revision was 11/1/01.

Sustainable transportation

  • Coalition for Sustainable Transportation (COAST). This group promotes travel by bike, foot, train, and bus throughout Santa Barbara County. They have a fine program promoting safe routes to school by walking and bicycling.
  • International Bicycle Fund. Nonprofit organization promotes sustainable transport and international understanding. Major areas of activity are non-motorized urban planning, economic development, bike safety education, responsible travel and tourism, and the cross-cultural, educational bicycle programs.
  • Planning and Conservation League. This California environmental coalition is targeting better bicycle, pedestrian, and public transit infrastructure as the top priority during the year 2000.
  • Santa Barbara Car Free. This local site encourages visitors and residents of the South Coast to leave their cars and explore our area by foot, bike, bus or any other non-automobile means.
  • Sierra Club on Transportation. The Sierra Club has examined transportation extensively and advocates alternatives to sprawl-inducing highway construction.
  • TransAct. Articles and reports on transportation and resources you need to make your community more livable. Supported by the Surface Transportation Policy Project.
  • Victoria Transport Policy Institute. Todd Litman's site is dedicated to innovative research and analysis; they develop practical tools for incorporating social and environmental values into transportation decision making.
  • Transportation Alternatives. Transportation Alternatives is a 4,500-member New York City citizens' group working for better bicycling, walking and public transit—and for fewer cars.

Online periodicals about bicycling

  • Bicycling. The biggest bicycling publication in the world has lots of information about everything. Includes specifications and comparisons on all US production bikes.
  • Bike Magazine. Dedicated to off-road bicycling.
  • Momentum. A Canadian magazine "for self-propelled people." Good mix of stories and reports about urban biking.
  • Outside. Coverage of bike rides, news, events and products mixed in with other healthy outdoor endeavors.
  • Triathlete. Site of Triathlete Magazine, the world's leading multisport publication, so they say.
  • VeloNews. This racing publication tracks worldwide road cycling people and events, including extensive coverage of the Tour de France.
  • Local Bike Trader. A commercial place to buy, sell, and trade bikes and related items online, with classifieds, articles and chat areas.

Bicycle commuting

  • Bicycling Street Smarts. All chapters of John Allen's book Bicycling Street Smarts, a guide to riding confidently and legally on streets.
  • Chicago Bicycle Commuting. Some Chicago-specific material, but many useful bike commute ideas.
  • Traffic Solutions. Our Santa Barbara County Traffic Solutions works hard to encourage workers to use alternatives to driving alone. Click on their section on bicycle commuting.
