Remember when you first learned to ride a bike?
Kids love bikes
Our certified League Cycling Instructors (LCIs) have been providing support and guidance to elementary school teachers. Last year we worked in 25 schools in Santa Barbara County. We bring bicycle riding education modules, 4-session programs, in-school, perfectly suited to 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th grade students.
A hearty 'thank you' is due to our financial partners for funding the launch of this life-changing program. THANK YOU Audacious Foundation for your tremendous support!
Upper grades learn traffic laws and have their first "driving experience" with a bicycle. They practice how to be visible, predictable and how to ride in traffic. The bike program for 6th graders culminates with a field trip on city streets (only for riders with League Cycling Instructor & parents' approval). Learn more in this article from the Santa Barbara Unified School District.
Many students learn to ride at school and would love to practice at home. They can't do it because they don't own a bike. If you have a youth bike collecting dust in your garage, consider donating it to Bici Centro Santa Barbara (434 Olive St) or Bici Centro Santa Maria (310 E. Oak St). Donated youth bikes will be refurbished and given away to students selected by teachers and principal in our local schools.
I was hesitant at first – I admit, BUT the bike program was amazing! The kids LOVED it! Erandy actually said, "This was the best day of my life!" Lots of sweaty, happy kids! A BIG thank you for bringing this to us. Looking forward to Mondays now :)
