Subject: Bikes Belong on State: Please Keep Our Promenade Open to ALL!
Dear Madame Mayor & Council Members,
I urge you to continue to allow bicycling and skating along our State Street Promenade. State Street is identified as the 'Spine' of the City's bike network in the Santa Barbara Bicycle Master Plan, and should continue to serve cyclists and families who wish to ride Downtown, crosstown, to the ocean and back (it's the safest and most direct route). There ARE road treatment options we can explore now to facilitate cyclists, skaters and pedestrians sharing State safely, and I ask that you let City Transportation Staff and the community work toward those solutions before taking the more drastic action of banning bicycle, skateboard or scooter riding on State. Like anything new, our Downtown Promenade is an evolving work in progress that needs time to 'settle in', and for the community to fully embrace its benefits for ALL. Please don't exclude a large population of PEOPLE who not only want to experience State Street on wheels, but who also bring a sizable amount of business to local shops and restaurants ON those wheels. Our retail and eatery owners now know that 'Bikes = Business', so let's not keep them from bringing that business to State Street. The revitalization of our Downtown economic recovery depends on PEOPLE...walking AND rolling...and Bikes Belong on State. Thank you!

Subject: Bikes Belong on State: Please Approve Bikeshare for a Better Downtown!
Dear Chair Grumbine & Commissioners,
I urge you to make the compatibility findings to grant project design and final approval for the City of S.B.'s BCycle Bikeshare pilot program along our State Street Promenade, elsewhere Downtown and along the Waterfront. Identified as the 'Spine' of the City's bike network in the Santa Barbara Bicycle Master Plan, State Street is the safest and most direct route for local and visiting individuals and families who wish to ride Downtown, crosstown, to the ocean and back. As proven in countless cities worldwide, bikeshare programs enhance access, vitality and livability for local residents and tourists alike, and can do so in an aesthetically compatible fashion. Bikeshare in S.B. would allow more people to easily enjoy the full stretch of our State Street Promenade in its future forms...an evolving work in progress. Bikes bring a sizable amount of business to local shops and restaurants and bikeshare can greatly contribute to this. Our retail and eatery owners now know that 'Bikes = Business', and S.B.'s bikeshare program will be an important part of that equation! The revitalization of our Downtown economic recovery depends on PEOPLE...walking AND rolling. For this reason, bikes and bikeshare belongs in S.B. Thank you for your consideration!
