A Global Day of Giving and Unity

Giving Tuesday announced #GivingTuesdayNow, taking place today, Tuesday May 5th, as a Day of Global Action for Giving and Unity in Response to COVID-19.

This day has been designed to increase global engagement, for support of the community and nonprofits. Here at SBBIKE, we are continuing to build community, empower our pedalists and move them safely around Santa Barbara County. We need your support to keep it up.

Although we are closed for our usual Do-It-Yourself (DIY) business, Bici Centro Santa Barbara and Santa Maria are open by appointments only for bike sale or/and bike repair. Our bilingual staff is also taking calls to help you do a small fix at home. This month, we have two fix-a-flat online classes being offered for free, in English and Spanish. Please check SBBIKE calendar and pre-register if you are interested in attending.

For riders trying to get back on their bikes, our bilingual certified League Cycling Instructors (LCIs) are offering online Confident City Cycling workshops in English and Spanish during lunch hours. Attendees will review important rules of the road, how to be visible, predictable and feel comfortable while riding around our community. If you are nervous navigating with other traffic, this class will share safety tips to improve your confidence.

SBBIKE, COAST and Traffic Solutions have been working together to create quiet neighborhood routes for families to walk, bike, scoot or board. Everyone needs time outdoors for physical and mental health: Family Walk & Roll is a great way to enjoy the fresh air, get your muscles moving and have fun right outside your front door! Follow chalk markings on sidewalks and streets in Santa Barbara and Goleta or use the free Strava app on your phone.

Our local trails, multi-use paths and beaches are crowded and not safe during this challenging time: SBBIKE has been working with City staff and Public Health to get these initiatives approved and, even more, our staff is pushing to get more open space for our community. Many cities in the US, and countries around the globe, have been closing or “slowing” neighborhood streets to car traffic so families can walk safely and exercise while respecting social distancing.

Help us keep the momentum going. Donate or become a member to be a part of this growing cycling community.
